Our department is an active supporter of the campus' mission of providing an education that emphasizes applied learning experiences for our students to connect theory to practice. In addition to courses in the applicant's area of specialization, the ability and willingness to teach introductory level courses, as well as courses in research methods and/or theory is desirable. The successful candidate will participate in the department's college in prison program, our growing online offerings, as well as teach courses which contribute to our degree programs in Sociology and/or Criminal Justice Studies, as well as our minors in Sociology, Criminal Justice Studies, Human Services, or Social Justice. The department is also involved in teaching in various interdisciplinary programs across the campus in Women and Gender Studies, Environmental Studies, Forensic Studies, and Public Policy and Homeland Security.

Responsibilities:

Engage in scholarly activities that contribute to the dissemination of knowledge in the discipline. Continually develop and improve skills and knowledge in the discipline through professional development. Teach courses as assigned in the program in a variety of instructional modalities (face-to-face, online, and college in prison program) and implements assessment and use of data for continuous improvement in course and program student learning outcomes. Participate in faculty committees, student advisement, and other activities related to university service. Job Summary/Basic Function::
The State University of New York (SUNY) College at Potsdam invites applicants for the SUNY Promoting Recruitment Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth plus (PRODiG + ) PRODiG+ Fellowship Program (PRODiG+) which focuses on two primary goals (1) increasing the number and share of excellent diverse faculty committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and (2) strengthening the pipeline for retention and support of these candidates. This role is a Full time, Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice beginning September 1, 2025. The areas of specialization for the position are open. The ability to teach criminology/criminal justice courses, is desirable. A successful candidate's areas of specialization will complement our programs.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. or relevant terminal degree from an accredited institution completed prior to starting date in sociology, criminology or related field. Eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship. Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations. We are seeking candidates who possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues and who have demonstrated a commitment to creating, fostering and sustaining an inclusive environment in and out of the classroom. Preferred Qualifications:

Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows. From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates), were first-generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor's degree), have overcome adversity, are AmeriCorps alumni, or are veterans. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching courses in Introduction to Sociology, Research Methods, Sociological Theory, Social Stratification, or Inequality at the college level OR Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminology, or Corrections at the college level. In addition, we are interested in candidates who can demonstrate the potential for scholarly activity involving undergraduate students, appropriate to the discipline.
