Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at Amherst College

The Amherst College Department of Anthropology and Sociology invites applications for a full- time, visiting appointment in sociology at the rank of assistant professor, beginning July 1, 2025, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, contingent upon the needs of the department and positive reviews of teaching and other responsibilities.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by the start of appointment. The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester at the undergraduate level, including an introduction to sociology course; two other introductory-level courses that complement current offerings in the department in the candidate’s area(s) of expertise; and one additional course. The visiting assistant professor will also supervise senior honors theses, attend department meetings, and otherwise participate in department activities. Applicants are asked to submit electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/161895 a cover letter; a curriculum vitae; the contact information for three confidential references; and a teaching portfolio that includes: a statement of teaching philosophy and practice, sample syllabi if available, and any further evidence of teaching success available, such as sample teaching evaluations for candidates with prior teaching experience. In the teaching statement, the candidate should provide brief course descriptions of at least three courses they might like to teach that expand, rather than duplicate, existing course offerings in our department. Department course offerings from previous semesters are available here:
https://www.amherst.edu/academiclife/departments/anthropology_sociology/courses. One hundred- and two hundred-level courses are considered introductory. While we welcome applicants with expertise in all substantive areas, courses on urban sociology and economic sociology, and courses that address work/labor, new technology/media, mass incarceration/criminology, and housing inequality/policy, are of particular interest.

Applications received by February 10, 2025, will receive full consideration, and review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to Professor Hannah Holleman, chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, at hholleman@amherst.edu.
