The Bates College Sociology Department invites applications for a three-year Visiting Assistant Professor position to begin July, 2025. We welcome applications from scholars with areas of specialization in sociological criminology and the sociology of crime and justice. The candidate will also be required to teach our social statistics course once per year. Candidates should have a commitment to undergraduate education, and should show promise of excellence and innovation in both teaching and scholarship.

An equitable and inclusive campus and curriculum are critical to our educational mission, and we are committed to teaching students from all backgrounds. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized, and first-generation students are encouraged to apply. We therefore ask candidates to identify their strengths and experiences in this area in their cover letter as well as teaching and scholarship statements.

The annual teaching load is 5 courses. We expect the successful candidate to teach one section of our Sociology 101 course, two 200-level courses on crime and criminology and social statistics, one advanced seminar in criminology/criminal justice, and one course during our 3.5 week May term. The appointment begins on July 1, 2025. Review of applications will begin March 1, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.

The Sociology Department is a vibrant and collegial unit on campus, with dynamic and engaged majors, and our faculty members are actively engaged in cutting edge pedagogy and scholarship. We look forward to welcoming the Visiting Assistant Professor to our campus.
