The Bates College Sociology Department invites applications for a one year Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning July, 2025. We welcome applications from scholars with areas of specialization in sociology of immigration and/or urban sociology, with attention to racially marginalized communities. The ideal candidate will cross-list at least two of their courses with the Program in Africana. Candidates should have a commitment to undergraduate education, and should show promise of excellence and innovation in both teaching and scholarship.

An equitable and inclusive campus and curriculum are critical to our educational mission, and we are committed to teaching students from all backgrounds. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized, and first-generation students are encouraged to apply. We therefore ask candidates to identify their strengths and experiences in this area in their cover letter as well as teaching and scholarship statements.

The annual teaching load is 5 courses. We expect the successful candidate to teach two sections of our Sociology 101 course, a 200-level course on either the sociology of immigration or urban sociology that will be cross-listed with Africana, a seminar in their area of specialization that will be cross listed with Africana, and one course during our 3.5 week May term. The appointment begins on July 1, 2025. Review of applications will begin February 24, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.

The Sociology Department and Africana Program are vibrant and collegial units on campus, with dynamic and engaged majors, and active faculty members. We look forward to welcoming the Visiting Assistant Professor to our units.
