The Department of Sociology and Criminology at Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning in August of 2025. The candidate is expected to teach courses in Gender and Social Theory. In addition, the candidate will be expected to also teach Social Problems and possibly an introductory sociology course. Other courses based on the candidate’s expertise are welcomed as we have two tracks: Social Inequality and Criminology. Infusing a diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) or global focus into one’s courses will be highly valued. Ability to work with a diverse student population, including those from historically underrepresented groups, will be essential.
A Ph.D. in Sociology by August of 2025 is required; an ABD in Sociology considered. To apply, please submit the following: (1) a cover letter summarizing your interest and qualifications, (2) a complete curriculum vitae, and (3) contact information for three confidential and current recommenders.

If invited to progress to the next round of consideration, the candidate will be asked to provide evidence of excellence in teaching – sample syllabi, statement of teaching philosophy, a set of teaching evaluations (if available); a statement of research philosophy; three current and confidential letters of recommendation; and graduate and undergraduate transcripts. In addition, a statement on diversity and inclusivity that provides evidence of the candidate’s commitment to the following: fostering an inclusive classroom environment that values diversity and taking into consideration students from a broad variety of backgrounds and learning styles.
After reviewing these materials, the search committee may select Zoom interviewees, and on the basis of those interviews, invite candidates for campus visits.
