The Department of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for a tenured position as Associate or Full Professor of Sociology (9 month term of appointment) who specializes in advanced data analyses, with an open substantive specialty to begin fall 2025. We seek to hire a scholar who can contribute to the Sociology Department and School of Data Science in teaching, research, and service.
Requirements for this position include 1) a Ph.D. in Sociology or related field; 2) a strong research agenda that focuses on the use of quantitative methods with big data; 3) a commitment to teaching in a dynamic, access-oriented, urban research university, 4) evidence of teaching experience or preparation for college teaching; and 5) potential to secure external funding.
The Department of Sociology offers the B.A. and M.A. in Sociology and our faculty participate in multiple interdisciplinary programs including Data Science, Organizational Science and Public Policy doctoral programs. As the largest and most academically diverse college at UNC Charlotte, the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences (CHESS) houses 15 departments, 18 interdisciplinary programs, and 6 applied centers. The School of Data Science (SDS) (sds.charlotte.edu) is an interdisciplinary unit housed in the College of Computing Informatics (CCI). The SDS, established in January 2020, was the first School of Data Science in the Carolinas. Currently, the school offers a Bachelor of Science in Data Science, an undergraduate certificate in Sports Analytics, and two Master of Science programs (Data Science and Business Analytics and Health Informatics and Analytics). The SDS is planning to launch a Ph.D. in Data Science in the Fall 2025 (Pending the final approval of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This unit teaches and researches methods to apply statistics and computer science techniques to develop data-driven solutions to real-world problems. These areas vary from the ethical application and use of data to communication studies, business, healthcare, social sciences, transportation, engineering, and more. The school has grown quickly to more than 800 students, with half of them being graduate students, and is continuing to evolve with the needs of the students, university, and community. Currently, the school has approximately 80 full time, joint and affiliate faculty.
