Stanford Next Asia Policy Postdoctoral Fellowship 2025-2027

Stanford Next Asia Policy Lab Invites Fall 2025 Applications for “Next Asia Policy Postdoctoral Fellow” Up to two two-year postdoctoral fellow positions are available to scholars with an interest in interdisciplinary research and policy engagement on contemporary Asia. Submissions are due December 1, 2024.

The Stanford Next Asia Policy Lab (SNAPL) is offering one or two postdoctoral fellowships (two years in length) to begin Fall Quarter of 2025. There are four fellowship tracks and applicants can apply for any of them: "Talent Flows and Development,” "Nationalism and Racism," "US-Asia Relations," and "Democratic Crisis and Reform."

SNAPL is a new innovative policy lab housed at the Shorenstein Asia Pacific Research Center (APARC) under the leadership of Professor Gi-Wook Shin. The lab is committed to addressing emergent social, cultural, economic, and political challenges in Asia through interdisciplinary, problem-oriented, policy-relevant, and comparative studies and publications. Each postdoctoral fellow will lead one thematic research group and support student programming for SNAPL alongside general research and publication activities. Duration

The appointment is for two years, with a possibility of extension contingent on satisfactory performance and funding.

Compensation

Each fellow will be offered an annual salary of $78,000 plus benefits. Postdoctoral fellows are required to be in residence at the Center for the duration of the appointment and are expected to participate in Center and Lab activities throughout the academic year. The postdoctoral fellows will participate in an annual SNAPL trip to Asia to conduct research and meet with collaborators and stakeholders. Additional privileges include access to Stanford research facilities and the opportunity to participate in events at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and elsewhere on campus.

Candidates interested in becoming postdoctoral fellows at SNAPL must submit the following documents with their online application form: 1) a formal letter of request detailing their relevant research and experiences related to one of the research themes, including plans for solo and collaborative, co-authored publications; 2) a formal and complete academic CV, including a list of publications; and 3) three letters of recommendation. The candidate’s legal name and email address must be included on the top of each required document.

In cases where there are overlapping interests, candidates are permitted to apply for more than one postdoctoral fellowship track.

Please note the following requirements:

• Candidates who will have received their PhDs within 3 years of the fellowship start date are eligible to apply. Recent PhDs are eligible to apply but must have dissertation submission and approval for conferral by June 30, 2025. Certification of degree completion and conferral must be submitted no later than August 31, 2025.
