Job Details

The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) is pleased to invite applications for various visiting fellowships on contemporary Asia, to begin in Autumn quarter 2025.

Next Asia Policy Visiting Fellowship

The Stanford Next Asia Policy Lab (SNAPL) is committed to addressing emergent social, cultural, economic, and political challenges in Asia through interdisciplinary, problem-oriented, policy-relevant, and comparative studies and publications. The lab is housed at Shorenstein APARC under the directorship of Professor Gi-Wook Shin. It focuses on four research themes: “Talent Flows and Development,” “Nationalism and Racism,” “U.S.-Asia Relations,” and “Democratic Crisis and Reform.”

SNAPL is inviting researchers and professionals from the Asia-Pacific region to apply for visiting fellow positions to begin in fall quarter 2025. Three visiting fellow positions are available, with one of them specifically dedicated to research on the Philippines. The lab seeks scholars and professionals with PhD degrees or substantial records of professional achievement related to four research themes: “Talent Flows and Development,” “Nationalism and Racism,” “U.S.-Asia Relations,” and “Democratic Crisis and Reform.”

The visiting fellows will work alongside postdoctoral fellows, affiliated Stanford faculty, and students to conduct research on one or more of the four themes listed above.

Taiwan Program Visiting Fellowship

Hosted by APARC's new Taiwan Program, the visiting fellow position is awarded to one mid-career to senior-level expert with extensive experience studying contemporary Taiwan. The fellowship research focus is on issues related to how Taiwan can meet the challenges and opportunities of economic, social, technological, environmental, and institutional adaptation in the coming decades, using a variety of disciplines including the social sciences, public policy, and business.

Visiting fellows are required to be in residence for the duration of the appointment, take part in APARC activities throughout the academic year, and meet with collaborators and stakeholders as needed. They are also expected to support programmatic needs such as colloquiums and participate in research collaboration through the Stanford Next Asia Policy Lab (SNAPL).

The application deadline for Autumn quarter 2025 admission is March 1, 2025.

Applications for both fellowships are open to candidates of all ranks with a PhD. There is a preference for mid-career professionals with a strong research and publication record. All fellows must be visiting from and affiliated with an outside institution or organization in the Asia-Pacific region and must be proficient in the English language.
