Job Details

The Department of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for one open rank (tenured or tenure-track) position set to begin in the fall of 2025. We seek a candidate at the assistant or associate professor rank with expertise in computational sociology.

This position is part of a technology cluster hire in the College of Arts and Letters and aligns with Notre Dame’s Strategic Framework Initiative in Data and Computational Science: https://strategicframework.nd.edu/initiatives/data-computational-science/.

The University of Notre Dame Sociology Department has a reputation for being both collegial and supportive without sacrificing ambition – Notre Dame Sociology is the fastest-rising department in the country, according to the U.S. News and World Report. The Department of Sociology at Notre Dame has longstanding excellence in the sociology of culture, education, movements and politics, religion, and theory. In recent years we have established strengths in several sociological areas including gender and family, global and transnational, health, race, and stratification. The faculty embraces a range of innovative methodological approaches and has expertise that covers the globe.

Our department offers a B.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology. Position duties include research, teaching, and service. The teaching load in Sociology is competitive and the position is expected to begin in August 2025.

Applications will be reviewed beginning September 1, 2024. The University of Notre Dame is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Further information about the Department of Sociology may be found at https://sociology.nd.edu. If you have questions, please contact Prof. Daniel Tadmon (daniel.tadmon@nd.edu).

Qualifications

Candidates at the assistant or associate level must have a Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related field. Candidates who are ABD in Sociology or a related field will also be considered. We seek a candidate with expertise in theory-driven computational sociology. This may include working with “big data,” relational data, social network analysis, computational text analysis, machine learning, agent-based modeling, or geospatial analysis techniques, among others. The substantive field of specialization is open.

The University of Notre Dame and its Department of Sociology are committed to teaching excellence and mentorship at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Successful applicants would be able to teach computational methods at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Application Instructions

The following application materials should be submitted through the Interfolio system: a letter of application, CV, a research statement, a teaching statement, course evaluations (if available), and writing samples of representative work–if possible, please include at least one solo-authored writing sample. For already tenured faculty, we will ask long-listed candidates for a minimum of three letters of reference at that time.
